EIN hub · federal record first

Use the EIN route that matches the applicant and location.

An EIN identifies a federal tax account. It does not form a company, replace a personal taxpayer ID, determine tax treatment, or guarantee acceptance by Amazon, a bank, or another provider.

Map the EIN route

Starting point

Answer three questions before choosing a form field.

The entity, application geography, and responsible party control different parts of the EIN route.

Applicant

Which person or entity needs the EIN?

Use the legal applicant that will own the federal tax account. A state company number, Amazon store name, and EIN are separate records.

Application geography

Which current IRS route applies?

Check the current applicant-location rules instead of inferring a channel from the founder's passport, LLC state, or registered-agent address.

Review the wider route →
Responsible party

Who ultimately owns or controls it?

The responsible party is the real controlling individual in the applicable IRS sense, not a formation nominee or a service-provider identity.

Application sequence

Build one truthful federal record.

The IRS route begins with the real applicant and ends with records that still need to be maintained after assignment.

  1. Confirm the applicant

Identify the real entity or individual that needs the federal tax account and the reason an EIN is being requested.

  2. Establish the legal entity first

When the applicant is a new legal entity, complete the applicable formation or registration step before applying for that entity's EIN.

  3. Choose the current IRS channel

Check the current IRS location and applicant rules instead of selecting a submission route from citizenship or a service-provider address alone.

  4. Name the responsible party

Use the real individual who ultimately owns, controls, or exercises effective control; a limited-authority nominee is not a substitute.

  5. Keep the federal record usable

Retain the assignment notice and update the IRS separately when the responsible party, address, or location changes.

Route boundaries

Separate the IRS application from paid assistance.

A preparation service can organize information and an authorized designee can have a limited role, but neither becomes the responsible party or controls the IRS decision.

Direct IRS route

  • The IRS provides a direct EIN application without a government application fee.
  • Use one application method for the same entity.
  • Use the current IRS page to select an available submission channel.
  • Keep the resulting notice with the company's controlled records.

Assistance is separate

  • A quoted service fee pays for agreed preparation or coordination—not the EIN.
  • Third-party-designee authority is limited and must be authorized correctly.
  • A nominee with limited formation authority cannot replace the responsible party.
  • No service can guarantee timing, tax treatment, or later provider acceptance.
Supporting sections

Keep the entity, evidence, and marketplace work in their own records.

An EIN can be one dependency in a wider launch; it does not complete the other layers.

Current authority

Check the live IRS route before applying.

Phone numbers, filing addresses, portal eligibility, processing estimates, and form revisions can change.
